PE battery separators are made from silica, UHMWPE, process oil, carbon black, and an anti-oxidation chemical package. By far the largest (by weight %) ingredient is the silica (The name should perhaps be 'silica separators'). The silica is an essential part of the PE battery separator. It forms the "backbone", or skeleton, which allows the separator to become hydrophilic, absorbing H2SO4 and allowing the electrochemical transfer of ions between the negative and positive plates of a lead-acid battery. The quality and type of the silica that we use is critical to ENTEK International's process and products. Most PE separator producers in the world use a wetting agent to increase the wettability of their UHMWPE separators. From the earliest beginnings until today, ENTEK International has refused to incorporate wetting agents into their separators that have the potential to evolve into acetic acid and compromise the lead-acid battery's electrochemical process. |
